Historical Note: 

What a bridge! The Confederation Bridge is the world's largest bridge crossing an ice-covered body of water, stretching 12.9 km. Although the bridge opened in 1997, the idea of creating a fixed link between our island and the mainland dates back to 1873. In the winter, the ice of the Northumberland Strait was too thick for vessels to cross, making communication and commerce challenging.

However, the original idea was to create a tunnel under the water. Aren't you glad we choose an above-sea option?
